There are many things that might affect an erection. Tiredness is one of them. If you are tired or stressed this may effect your erection – looking at ways to get more rest, relaxation and sleep would be a good start. Your question raises other questions such as, have you always felt like this or only recently? Is your horniness affected or just the physical side of sex? Alternatively, is it possible that you are bored rather than tired during sex? Would it help to try something new or different when you have sex? It might also be a good idea to talk to your GP or a sexual health clinician – they may be able to identify some other solutions.

Can normal condoms be used for anal sex? Or should thicker ones be used?

View responses (2)

The Sexpert, 9 October 2009

Good question. The basic rule is that any condom is better than no condom. The free ones you get from saunas, gay bars, or from the New Zealand AIDS Foundation are all the stronger variety because anal sex is generally harder on condoms than vaginal sex.  Regardless of which condoms you use it is essential to use lots and lots of lube for anal sex.  The most important thing is to find a condom that you feel comfortable using and that you have confidence in. Rest assured though, HIV cannot pass through intact latex when it is used with water-based or silicone-based lube for anal sex.

When I have unprotected sex with my husband his cum comes out a little later on. Is this normal?

The Sexpert, 9 October 2009

Yes, it is normal for women to experience this. Semen (the fluid that carries sperm) will either travel farther into the vagina, or seep out and eventually dry up, or both.

Can you contract HIV by swallowing semen?

View responses (2)

The Sexpert, 12 October 2009

No. It isn’t the swallowing that involves risk of HIV transmission, but the condition of your mouth and how long the semen remains there. Significant broken skin in your mouth, gum disease and other STI’s increase the risk of HIV transmission through oral sex. If you get semen in your mouth spit or swallow (it’s doesn’t matter which) quickly. Oral sex without semen remains low risk .

For optimum sexual health and wellbeing for those of us who are sexually active, we recommend a full sexual health check every three to six months from your nearest sexual health clinic, or New Zealand AIDS Foundation Centre

Sucking involves some risk but not many will suck a condom. What do you think of this dilemma?

View responses (1)

The Sexpert, 12 October 2009

Very few men to use condoms for oral sex and given that oral sex is low risk for HIV transmission it’s far more important for condoms to be used for anal sex.  For optimum sexual health and wellbeing, we recommend a full sexual health check every three to six months from your nearest sexual health clinic, or New Zealand AIDS Foundation Regional Centre.

I'm HIV positive - is it safe to use my toys with my new partner?

View responses (1)

The Sexpert, 11 September 2009

Before you share your sex toys, it’s important to remember that some precautions are necessary. It’s best to have your own personal sex toys and never share them.

However, dildos and other toys may be washed with soap and water and then used by another person. Condoms may be placed on dildos and vibrators to avoid needing to wash them before a second person uses them. It is important to change the condom every time that the toy passes from one person to another.

I've a quick question - if my mate and I wanked each other off, can I still get HIV even though we didnt have sex?

View responses (1)

The Sexpert, 11 September 2009

If you’re just wanking yourself, there’s no risk of HIV infection whatsoever.  However, if you used each other’s cum as lube, there’s theoretically a very low risk of HIV infection, but in reality there’s been nearly no documented cases of HIV infection by this means documented anywhere in the world. If you’re worried, you should go get yourself tested.  You can find more information here.
