Itchy & Scratchy

Like HIV, STIs such as Gonorrhoea and Syphilis are on the rise in New Zealand. Most STIs are passed on during Unprotected vaginal, anal or Oral sex. Compared to HIV, STIs are much easier to get because they are far more prevalent among both gay and bisexual men as well as heterosexual communities. 

• some STIs, such as Genital Warts, herpes and Syphilis are passed on just by close skin contact
• unlike HIV, STIs can be easily transmitted through Oral sex
• STIs such as Gonorrhoea and Chlamydia make you more Vulnerable to HIV
• Syphilis makes HIV four times easier to transmit and receive.

 

Signs to look out for

• Unusual discharge or smell from vagina or penis
• Pain or burning feeling when you go to the toilet
• New or unusual lumps, blisters, painless sores or rashes on or around the genitals
• Copper-coloured rash on your feet, hands or body
• Itchiness or irritation
• Lower abdominal pain
• Bleeding between periods

IMPORTANT: Not everyone has Symptoms if they have an STI

Get Tested

• You need to test regularly (every 3 to 6 months) if you’re highly sexually active whether you have Symptoms or not
• If you have sex from time to time an annual sexual health check-up is recommended
• If you have Symptoms you should receive a sexual health check-up from your doctor, local sexual health clinic, Family Planning clinic or nearest NZAF Centre.
